Wood Stove Installation Where Winters Run Long
A wood stove with its liner or pipe typically costs $3,000 to $8,000 installed in New Jersey, and a pellet stove $1,600 to $4,100. We plan clearances and permits first.
Most of New Jersey heats with gas, but the northwest corner is different. In Sussex County, 48 percent of homes heat with oil and almost 4 percent heat mainly with wood, the highest share in the state by the Census's count. Hunterdon and Warren are about a quarter oil. Newton sees about 142 nights a year at or below freezing in NOAA's normals, close to twice Newark's. That is where a good wood stove earns its keep.
A stove is only as safe as its installation. The flue must be the right size and lined, the stove must sit on a proper hearth pad, and it needs the clearances to walls and furniture that its manufacturer lists. We install stoves into existing masonry chimneys with a stainless liner, or with insulated chimney pipe through the wall or roof when there is no chimney to use.
Signs you need this
- You burn wood but heat mostly with oil or propane
- An open fireplace that loses more heat than it gives
- An old stove with cracked glass, warped parts or no gaskets
- A stove connected without a liner in an old masonry flue
- You want heat that works when the power goes out
How we do it
- Site visitWe look at where you want the stove, the chimney or the route for new pipe, floor protection and clearances, then give you a written price.
- Permit through your townWood stove installs go through your town's construction office. We file for the permit and schedule the inspection.
- Liner and hearthA stainless liner goes down the masonry chimney, or insulated pipe goes up through the house. The stove sits on a hearth pad rated for it.
- Connect, test and walk throughWe connect and seal the stove, check draft with a test fire and show you how to load it and run the air controls.
What does a wood stove install cost in New Jersey?
A wood stove with its stainless liner or chimney pipe typically runs $3,000 to $8,000 installed. The stove model, the chimney height and whether new pipe has to go through floors and roof move the number most. A pellet stove, which usually vents through a short pipe out the wall, typically runs $1,600 to $4,100 installed.
One cost change for 2026: the federal tax credit for wood and pellet stoves covered stoves placed in service by the end of 2025. Stoves installed in 2026 do not qualify, and we found no New Jersey wood stove rebate in the state's clean energy listings.
Do I need a permit and a chimney check?
Yes, in practice. Wood stove installs are handled by your town's construction office, and the state's F-370 chimney verification form includes a section for solid fuel appliances. We handle the permit when your town requires it and give you the liner and stove paperwork the inspector asks for.
A stove is a fuel-burning appliance, so New Jersey's carbon monoxide alarm rule applies: alarms in the immediate vicinity of the sleeping areas. Put them in before the first fire.
Wood stove or outdoor wood boiler?
An indoor stove heats the rooms around it and vents up a lined chimney. An outdoor wood boiler sits in the yard and pipes hot water into the house. In New Jersey, outdoor wood boilers must meet the DEP's smoke rule, which allows no visible smoke except for three minutes in any 30-minute period, with penalties starting at $300. We install indoor stoves only.
FAQ
Wood Stove Installation questions
Can I put a wood stove into my existing fireplace chimney?
Usually yes, with a stainless liner run from the stove to the top of the chimney. The chimney has to be sound and the liner sized for the stove.
Pellet or wood?
Pellets are easier: a hopper feeds the fire and a thermostat runs it, but it needs electricity. Wood needs more work and storage but keeps heating in a power outage. Many Sussex and Warren homes choose wood for that reason.
Is there a tax credit for a wood stove in 2026?
No federal one. The IRS biomass stove credit only covered stoves placed in service by the end of 2025, and a search of New Jersey's clean energy programs turned up no state stove rebate.
Do I need a CO alarm with a wood stove?
Yes. New Jersey requires carbon monoxide alarms near the sleeping areas in homes with fuel-burning appliances, and a wood stove is one.
How often does a new stove need its chimney swept?
At least once a year for most households that burn regularly, more if you burn a lot or burn wet wood. We check it at the free inspection and price any sweep there.
