Chimney Service in Hunterdon County
Mostly rural, a quarter of homes on oil and more wood heat than almost anywhere in the state. The inspection is free.
Hunterdon is one of New Jersey's most rural counties: 58 percent of residents lived in rural areas at the 2020 census. Its housing is newer than its towns suggest, with a median build year of 1981 in the Census Bureau's 2024 survey, but 17 percent of homes still predate 1940. Lambertville, across the Delaware from New Hope, was listed almost entirely as a historic district in 1983, and Flemington, the county seat, and Clinton have older centers of their own.
Fewer than half of Hunterdon homes, 47 percent, heat with utility gas. A quarter use fuel oil, 10 percent use propane, and about 1,130 homes, 2.2 percent, heat mainly with wood. That makes Hunterdon one of the main stove and insert counties in the state, and it means many chimneys vent an oil or propane boiler rather than a gas furnace. Oil leaves soot, and propane exhaust is wet like natural gas, so both are hard on an old clay liner. We check whichever flues the house has at the free inspection.
Wood and pellet stoves
Stoves used as main heat often run all winter. The pipe and liner need a cleaning every season, priced at the free inspection. Glazed creosote that has to be removed with special tools typically runs $400 to $900.
A new wood stove installation typically runs $3,000 to $8,000, a pellet stove $1,600 to $4,100, and a wood insert with liner $3,000 to $7,000. Your town's construction office issues the permit, and we pull it.
Oil and propane flues
When an oil boiler is replaced or a house switches to propane or gas, New Jersey requires a chimney verification on form F-370 first. It asks whether the chimney is clean of residue from the old fuel and lined and sized for the new appliance. A homeowner can't sign it. A liner for a new boiler or water heater typically runs $625 to $2,250.
FAQ
Hunterdon County questions
Can you work on chimneys in Lambertville's historic district?
Yes. We repair old masonry with mortar suited to the brick and match what is there. For a visible change, such as a rebuild in a different shape, check with the town first. We photograph what we find at the free inspection.
How do I know if my wood stove liner is damaged?
Signs include smoke smell in the room, flakes of metal at the base and poor draft. We check the liner from the top and the stove end at the free inspection. A new stainless liner typically runs $1,500 to $5,000.
We heat with propane. Does our chimney need anything?
Propane exhaust is wet, like natural gas, and can wear down an old clay liner and mortar. The flue should be checked yearly and must be sized for the appliance. A propane boiler replacement needs the F-370 chimney verification too.
