Chimney Service in Cumberland County

Glass towns, farmland and the Delaware Bay, with more oil heat than most of South Jersey. We inspect for free.

Cumberland County sits on the Delaware Bay, and its towns grew on farming and glass. Millville's first glass factory opened in 1806, and John Landis Mason of Vineland invented the mason jar in the 1850s. Bridgeton, the county seat, has the largest historic district of any New Jersey municipality, with more than 2,000 properties. The Census Bureau's 2024 survey puts 17 percent of the county's homes before 1940 and the median home at 1969.

Heating is mixed. About 64 percent of Cumberland homes use utility gas, 14 percent use fuel oil, and about 520 homes heat mainly with wood. In Vineland and Millville, many chimneys vent a gas or oil boiler through brick that is decades old. Oil leaves soot and scale in the flue, and gas exhaust is wet enough to wear down old clay tile and mortar. When a boiler is replaced, New Jersey's F-370 chimney check comes first.

Bridgeton's old brick

Old chimneys in Bridgeton and Millville tend to need repointing, a new crown and a liner. Repointing typically runs $500 to $2,500, a crown $600 to $2,200, and a stainless liner $1,500 to $5,000. If a chimney is unlined with open mortar joints, the New Jersey fire code says it shall be repaired or relined. In a historic district, we match the existing brick and check with the town before any visible change.

Oil boilers and fuel switches

With one home in seven on oil, many Cumberland chimneys carry soot and scale from years of oil burning. When a boiler is replaced, or a house switches from oil to gas or propane, New Jersey requires a chimney verification on form F-370, which asks whether the flue is clean of residue and lined and sized for the new appliance. A liner for a new boiler or water heater typically runs $625 to $2,250.
